Zone Modelling is based on deterministic mathematical models that have been developed to address a particular aspect of the problem. These single parameter models, often derived empirically, can usually be solved by the engineer using simplistic calculations

Zone modelling can, for example, be used to calculate the amount of heat and smoke produced by a fire and the amount of ventilation required to extract or control the heat and smoke to aid in the design of simple atria ventilation systems.
