Question
We are proposing to construct a jumbo stud wall in a retail unit, height 5m, 1 hour fire rating, build up 148 metal studs, 2 layers of 12.5 plasterboard either side, as illustrated in the British Gypsum White Book. In order to provide fixing for shop fit,it has been suggested to replace the bottom sheet of PB (inner layer, one side only) with fire rated 12.5 MDF. i.e. from floor level up to 2.4m the build up will be 2 x 12.5 PB - 148 stud - 12.5 FR MDF - 12.5 PB. If this is introduced, is the 1 hr rating of the wall maintained? And what is the rating requirement of the MDF class 1 or 0?

Author: Niall Rowan Date: 1/5/2007 3:58:39 PM
Answer

We are getting a lot of enquires regarding MDF used in fire rated situations. Typically, the enquirer wants to know (as you do) if a fire retarded MDF can be used to substitute a Fire Resisting board such as plasterboard, calcium silicate board etc.

Reaction to Fire ratings of wall linings such as class 1 and class O are not the same thing as Fire Resistance ratings of 30 minutes, 60 minutes etc. Reaction to Fire tests measure literally how products 'react to fire' i.e. how they burn. The tests are small scale and many are not very severe. Fire Resistance tests on the other hand measure the ability of a construction such as a door, or a wall, or a floor to a large fully developed fire. The tests are carried out in large specialised furnaces and are severe.

Unfortunately, while MDF can have its Reaction to Fire performance improved by the addition of flame retardants or surface treatments, its Fire Resistance performance cannot be upgraded so easily. So, in short, without any evidence of the fire resistance of MDF. We have to say that replacing plasterboard with it would not be acceptable. One ray of hope. Our Technical department may be able to look at the construction and offer you an assessment as you are only removing 1/4 of the plasterboard. But they would need to examine the details of the construction. Please e-mail me if you need any more help.
